AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies are growing across several industries around the globe today; agriculture, energy, finance, healthcare, and transportation.

AI (Artificial Intelligence), along with machine learning, will allow physicians to make better decisions, provide patients with convenient, more personalized treatments and will allow hospitals to outperform its previous results. This technology promotes the creation of intelligent machines that can “act and react” like humans which will allow healthcare workers to accomplish more tasks, improve operational activities that boost cost savings and promote patient satisfaction. With automation, most of the mundane tasks that take up a healthcare workers time, like EHR docs, admin reporting, and triaging x-rays/CT Scans, can free up employees to work on the complicated challenges of a patient’s condition.

Accenture has reported that AI market for Healthcare in 2021 will be $6.6 billion (up from $600 million in 2014) and by implementing AI can potentially save the healthcare industry $52 billion.

Machine Learning Algorithms and Pattern Recognition

AI in custom healthcare solutions utilizes algorithms and software to resemble human cognition when examining complicated medical information. The primary objective of healthcare-related AI is to evaluate connections between primary prevention, treatment methods, and clinical outcomes.

AI has the means of identifying significant relations within data and is used in many clinical trials to “predict and pre-empt” medical outcomes. What differentiates AI from conventional procedures in healthcare is the ability to gain information, process it and deliver precise conclusions to the consumer. AI performs this via machine learning algorithms, which recognizes patterns in behavior.

Pattern recognition is a classification of data based on knowledge already gained or statistical information extracted from patterns. It also can detect arrangements of characteristics or data that provide information about the system or data. Predictive analytics in data science leverages pattern recognition algorithms to identify statistically possible changes in time series data. A type of data that indicates the changes over time in a device, system, application, process, and behavior is time series data. It is often present in operation and maintenance (O&M) systems, the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

AI Transforming Healthcare

AI has made modest steps towards focusing on some of the fundamental healthcare issues, but there is a tremendous opportunity to create a significant global impact. As the challenges are addressed, AI could play a critical role in how healthcare in the future operates, supporting healthcare workers and maximizing patient outcomes.

Despite really being at the initial stages of this technological revolution, AI is already, and has been, transforming healthcare:

AI Assisted Surgery: Today, robots can analyze data from pre-op medical records to guide a surgeon’s instrument during a surgical procedure. AI-assisted surgery is defined as “minimally invasive surgery” since it results in fewer complications to patients during these operations. Robots can leverage information from past surgeries for new surgical approaches that lessen the opportunity for error by surgeons as well as a 21% reduction in patient overnight stays.

Medical Mobile Apps and Virtual Doctors: With the help of AI, mobile apps provide health information and recommendations to individuals with a variety of symptoms. A sick person no longer needs to contact a medical office, wait a few days to get an appointment to see a nurse practitioner (not their physician) to receive treatment. Once you encounter symptoms individuals can obtain medical advice before actually falling ill.

AI can also provide “Virtual Doctors” to review a patient’s file and conduct clinical research to provide customized treatment plans for the patient. Patients verbally communicate symptoms to the “Doctor”. Speech recognition algorithms correlate the symptoms to an ailment directory and then the “Doctor” provides recommended treatment.

Wearable Health Devices: Wearable Health Devices (WHDs), a continually emerging AI technology, enables ongoing monitoring of vital signs in a clinical environment, in addition to everyday life, while providing the advantage of minimizing interference with normal daily activities. WHDs are helping people better monitor their health in activity/fitness and at medical facilities by providing critical information to Physicians to determine earlier medical diagnostics and treatment.

It is evident that Al is hard at work in healthcare. AI also provides help to individuals with diabetes by regulating their blood sugar. Pharmacy prescription refills are automated. It is prepared to assist with cancer detection and radiology. AI is also leveraged to keep track of drugs, medical devices and equipment in healthcare facilities. It also encourages patient financial responsibility.

AI and healthcare continue to grow as algorithms progress, medical data prospers and computer speeds and storage are scaled. By the year 2020, over 50% of all Healthcare Organizations will be using AI Technologies.

Discovering the VALUE of AI in Healthcare

Customer expectations are now the main focus of Physicians in response to the never-ending out-of-pocket costs and minimal reimbursements, healthcare providers need to deliver on how to prove a personalized patient experience that eliminates unnecessary expenses, along with ongoing open lines of communication between office visits to keep patients healthy.

Ensure Improved Healthcare Performance: By automating manual and repetitive tasks, AI determines established patterns and identifies opportunities for error by improving a healthcare employees performance and at the same time lowering medical costs.

AI (Robots) in Healthcare is Not a Replacement (Yet)

At least for now, physicians and nurses need not worry. A robot, as a replacement for a human, is simply a concept. Humans are very much needed to aggregate and organize data, identify trends and patterns to make recommendations. Healthcare providers can, with empathy, evaluate a patient to determine the symptom or test result.

Today, healthcare organizations that are innovating with big data analytics and machine learning are more comfortable viewing AI as a partner to doctors and nurses. Technology researchers are constantly working on enhancing the basics of machine learning, natural language processing, pattern recognition, as well as other components of AI to take on the cumbersome challenges of healthcare.

Driving this new era of medical evaluation and treatment with AI will allow physicians, as well as nurses, to make better decisions and provide patients with convenient, more personalized treatments.
