When did you know you wanted to be a Designer?
I always enjoyed art from when I was child and throughout high school, so I decided to go to design college. After studying communications design in college, I knew then that I wanted to be a designer because I truly believe in the power of design to change things and make an impact. I used to illustrate and design books when I was younger and I remember designing my first logo when I was 10; it was for a t-shirt representing our classroom entitled “WACK!” (We Are Cool Kids)
Who is your favorite designer and why?
I recently discovered Charlie Harper when I was at a restaurant and I found an old calendar with his illustrations in it. I really like the way he interprets nature into more graphic elements and shapes and the harmony with which he puts the pieces together.
What would people never guess about you?
I’m actually very competitive! People tend to think I’m more quiet or reserved but I’m actually not when I play sports - especially soccer!
What motivates you?
People motivate me. Being around positive people who push ideas off of each other helps me be more creative and motivated.
What is your favorite FM project and why?
My first project at FM was in the Cannabis industry and we started by going out into the field and talking to cultivators and learning about the industry as a whole. This gave us a chance to understand the needs of the people we were designing for. In the past I hadn’t had the chance to physically go out into the field and really talk to people. This gave me a better understanding of the complex industry and players, which I really needed to see first hand to inform the designs that came next.
Where do you look for inspiration?
For software design inspiration there are a few sites I look at - Dribble, Behance, Muzli, and Collect UI. I also go to meetups and industry events to learn more from others in my field.
What are you afraid of?
Donald Trump My cat running away! One time he disappeared for a week and I thought he was dead..that was terrible.
What’s the last book you read?
Game of Thrones. I don’t love watching it because it’s so gory, but I like the story and the characters.
What’s the most memorable place you’ve been?
Colombia and Central America. A few years ago, I biked from Bogota to Nicaragua and the coolest place was probably the border where Colombia meets the Panama. We had to take a small fishing boat to cross the over because there are no official roads connecting the countries. On the boat and we passed through beautiful fishing villages that felt so far away from modern life. We also passed pristine caribbean islands that were so hard to get to that they were empty and untouched. Once we got to land to in Carti, Panama we had to bike up winding mountains so steep that I had to walk my bike so that we could get to the main road. The 40 mile road ended up taking two days and at one point we ran out of water and had rely on a kind stranger who stopped to see how we were doing!
What are the top five songs you would put on your playlist?
At Home by Crystal Fighters Time On Her Side by Future Islands I Know It’s Over by The Smiths My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit And of course, everyone’s favorite latin hit: Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee
Where do you want to be in 10 years?
I want to be traveling to around the world with a homebase of the beautiful Maine seacoast. I would like to be more senior in my field and mentor and manage others.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
My parents both really influenced me but in different ways. My mom was a commercial artist and my dad was a database programmer so I think I got some skills from both of them. My best friend from college has also been a big influence because we’ve done so many things together; we’ve biked across the US, we lived in San Francisco for five years, and then we both lived in Colombia…and married Colombians!
